Typography: Assignment I - Results

The students in my Lettering, Typography and Layout class responded well to the first assignment, producing products that demonstrated their growing knowledge.
The class was ask to develop a three part series that would: 1) form a shape from a letter of the alphabet, 2) make a composition using a word that includes the earlier letter and 3) finally adding an image that supports the message of the composition.

The series above were produced by student Theresa Harrison.

Getting on Track: Design at GM

I recall working at GM's technical campus as a co-op student in high school. I worked along side experienced metal model makers in creating parts for GM's experimental vehicles. It was a good work experience and it had a direct impact on my desire to go on to college.

It is also note worthy to mention that the vice-president of global design, Ed Welburn, is one of two African-Americans in a senior level design position for a major corporation that I am aware of.

Mercury News Article

If GM doesn't make the right choices Toyota will soon replace it as the number one auto maker in the world. I am sad to say this but I would put my money on Toyota. So mnay American companies have lost their way, focus on providing quality products to their customers, and as a result customers have walk away.

Do Children Still Fly Kites?

It seems that toy design has taken a liking to computing power as much as other industries that have moved to producing electronic products . Are children less interested in the challenges of simple activities like kite flying, and are more enamored by all the remote controlled gizmo's coming to market?

One thing that seems to be sure is that buying stock in a battery company is a good idea.

Teaching Typography

Well the opportunity to teach a class on Typography, Lettering and Layout has not allowed me time to post an entry this week. Instead, I have been formulating projects that would assist my students in their understanding of graphic design fundamentals. I look forward to posting at least one of the students projects in the coming week.

I hope to get back to posting by the weekend.13 Ways of Looking at Typeface
