A great project for a introductory design class would be to have the students consider ways of improving the toilet paper holder.I believe this would work well as an student project because the toilet roll is so much a part of our day-to-day lives that it is often unnoticed. So in asking students to rethink this object and address the opportunities within the context of today would no doubt yield some interesting results.
